Founder’s Message

The Sports for Youth Foundation was founded in 2010 fueled very much by my own passion for sports. God has blessed me with a healthy and exciting life through sports that it only seems natural to contribute back to society the same way. In 2011 we started a sporting venture with the opening of PLAY which was a 20,000 sq ft indoor facility in Kwun Tong for indoor skiing; baseball & softball training and car racing simulation. Unfortunately due to government regulations, we had to close the centre in 2017. But I can still remember vividly the emotions during those years, when I saw a kid attempting to hit a ball at the batting cages or boys and girls going up and down the ski slopes gleaming in that moment of joy - isn’t that what life is all about?

As a medical practitioner, everyday I tell my patients to do sports and stay fit. Statistics have shown that if you are not physically active by the time you leave school, you are likely to remain sedentary and inactive for the rest of your life. Which is why it is so important to focus our efforts on this window of opportunity - in the primary and high school years. The benefits of sports can be seen across the full spectrum of life and it is important for every parent to recognize this and encourage their children towards a more sporting and physically active lifestyle. We also hope that this will create an opportunity for parents to reflect and consider adopting a more active lifestyle themselves.

Over the past 10 years, the Foundation has supported many different sporting activities for our youths. Our biggest efforts have been the sponsorship of baseball and softball programmes for a group of primary schools and our highlight was the sending of the Hong Kong under 12 girls team to compete internationally in Jakarta in 2019.

The social unrest and COVID-19 have been a very difficult time for Hong Kong. We are therefore renewing our efforts in  2021 with the “Love Life Love Sports” initiative. We have chosen the sports carefully to fulfill several important criteria. They must be fun and suited to our Hong Kong youths and must also be “sustainable “ after their initial training program.  We appeal to every parent for their full support.
